SEA LIONS AT LA JOLLA COVE
Last Thursday my niece and I made a stop at La Jolla Cove to see what the sea lion scene looked like this time of year. It was a planned visit, but I honestly wasn’t sure what we’d find. Turns out there are a lot of them!
From the beach you can see the rocks just offshore, and they were covered with sea lions and pelicans - stretched out, sleeping in the sun, and occasionally lifting their heads to bark or shuffle around.
Most of them were sleeping, but at one point two sea lions got into a short scuffle. It only lasted a few seconds, but it was enough to catch a little action on camera. A ranger was nearby keeping an eye on things and making sure everyone stayed at least twenty feet back.
There were plenty of other sightseers and a few photographers around, too. I brought my Nikon Z6 with a polarizing filter to cut some of the glare off the water and rocks.
It’s amazing it is to be this close to wildlife in the middle of a coastal town. It ended up being a really fun stop and something I hadn’t done before. If you’re into photographing sea life and find yourself near San Diego, this is definitely a spot worth checking out.
